About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

A TV script writer thinks she's over romance, until an unlikely love interest upends all her assumptions: a humorous, subversive and tender-hearted novel from the New York Times and Sunday Times bestselling author of Rodham, American Wife and Prep.

Life is (not)* a Romantic Comedy...

With a series of heartbreaks under her belt, Sally Milz - successful script writer for a legendary late-night TV comedy show - has long abandoned the search for love.

But when her friend and fellow writer begins to date a glamorous actress, he joins the growing club of interesting but average-looking men who get romantically involved with accomplished, beautiful women. Sally channels her annoyance into a sketch, poking fun at this 'social rule'. The reverse never happens for a woman.

Then Sally meets Noah, a pop idol with a reputation for dating models. But this isn't a romantic comedy - it's real life. Would someone like him ever date someone like her?

Skewering all our certainties about why we fall in love, Romantic Comedy is a witty and probing tale of how the heart will follow itself, no matter what anyone says. It is Curtis Sittenfeld at her most sharp, daring and compassionate best.

I was in the mood for a light easy to listen to book and this fit the bill. I liked how she talked about the making of the late night show which, in effect, was Saturday night live. The story of how a gorgeous star falls for a clever ordinary girl is always satisfying. The book was well read and the narrator managed to capture all the voices very well. I just found it a bit repetitive with her insecurities and constant whining about how lucky she was to have such a gorgeous man, fall in love with her. It just got a bit old after awhile. I was glad to see it and, but I did enjoy it while I was listening to it.

It was an easy listen, but nothing groundbreaking! A lot of covid references which now seems a bit weird.

A beautiful and authentic story which unfolds before and during the global pandemic. Wonderful and believable characters in Sally and Noah.

A really engaging and romantic tale.

it kept me entertained during my travels and commute. The narrator was really good which is always important with audiobooks.

A smart, funny, clever, incredibly romantic and delightful listen. Fantastic writing. I didn’t want it to end.

Took a while to get into but I thought the premise was great. Enjoyed the narration and the neurosis of the main character.

I loved it

It’s exceptionally well written and performed. I enjoyed the entire experience and finished the book in no time. However, when it comes to the story, I went from being extremely excited about the premise, to being disappointed at what was ultimately delivered. But definitely a good read, particularly for the lovely, fast-witted dialogue.

Utterly relatable, yet still concerningly unrealistic

repetitive, boring, cliche, if you liked Rodham don't read this. didn't seem like same author.

really disappointed

hard to tell so many jokes in a book and have them pass as funny conversations but it works in this book. enjoyed watching the unconventional love story evolve

good writing

Beautifully read
Slightly annoying lead character but some very well observed moments

Enjoyed but not sad that ended. Some lovely characterisation of “minor” characters
