About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

The first woman ever admitted to a prestigious order of mages unravels a secret conspiracy that could change the practice of magic forever in this standalone dark fantasy from the author of
The Sword of Kaigen.

For twenty years, Sciona has devoted every waking moment to the study of magic, fuelled by a mad desire to achieve the impossible: to be the first woman ever admitted to the High Magistry at the University of Magics and Industry.

When Sciona finally achieves her ambition and becomes a Highmage, she finds her challenges have just begun. Her new colleagues are determined to make her feel unwelcome – and instead of a qualified lab assistant they give her a janitor.

What neither Sciona nor her peers realize is that her taciturn assistant was not always a janitor. Ten years ago he was a nomadic hunter who lost his family on their perilous journey from the wild plains to the city. But now he sees the opportunity to finally understand the forces that decimated his tribe, drove him from his homeland – and keep the privileged in power.

At first, mage and outsider have a fractious relationship. But working together, they uncover an ancient secret that could change the course of magic forever – if it doesn’t get them killed first.

Amazing plot, writing, world building, characters and narration. Absolutely stunning book that I couldn’t put down.

Very entertaining read, full of flawed and complex characters and moral revelations that hold a fantastical mirror up to reality. Easy to follow but not always a dead giveaway. Would have preferred more of a conclusion to the romantic storyline, with the amount of set up given, however this might have compromised the pacing so I’m not too mad.

Without a doubt one of the best stories I've listened too. Voice acting was great and I couldn't stop listening to it.

Incredible Story

This book was heartbreakingly beautiful. very glad to have read it. Will be looking at more books from this author, very well written and though I love sequels I think this is perfect as a standalone book.

Excellently written

In an icy world fraught with a violent blight that strikes with bloodcurdling consequences, the Kwen are an endangered species and Thomil and his remaining tribe seek sanctuary in the safety of the city of Tiran behind a Mage's barrier, but there are prices to be paid in making the journey...then in the city itself young student Sciona seeks to become the first woman to become a High Mage, and finds herself facing off against the establishment, where talent meets privilege and power. As Sciona's ambitions set her against her fellow High Mages, she is matched with a Kwen assistant, leading to a deeper questioning of the inequalities holding up the city's status and powering it's industries and prosperity. As she delves into academia of magic she discovers knowledge brings great responsibility.

A dark fantasy that grips from the outset, with a complex magic system that is novel and interesting, and a well drawn series of lead characters facing challenging situations and complex moral dilemmas. A story of the cruelty of civilization built on the backs of others.

A dark fantasy about the price of status

This is a really well written and performed book. The story is interesting and the world captivating.

The only negative for me was that it felt very white saviour (or the story’s equivalent of), especially near the end.

Enjoyable but a bit white saviour-y

I loved everything about this book! It’s such a good but tragic story. I can’t help but want to know more about what is to come to the characters.
